Proceeds from the calendar sales will offset the cost of additional automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in an effort to fully equip all department vehicles. With our entire fleet having this life saving technology, we will be able to provide our community with a greater chance of survival should a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) event occur.
An AED is used to help those experiencing SCA in a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use way. It is a medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. These devices can be used on adults, children, and infants. While CPR keeps blood flowing artificially, rapid defibrillation is the only way to restart the heart and reset it back to a healthy rhythm. The chances of the victim’s survival decrease by as much as 10% with every minute that they do not receive rapid defibrillation. Having an AED in your workplace or community can make the difference between life and death. The use of an AED within the first three minutes of SCA can increase survival rates over 80% in some cases. According to the American Heart Association, there were more than 356,000 out-of-hospital SCA in the U.S. in 2022, with nearly 90% of them being fatal.
As always, we thank you for your continued support of Northbridge Fire Department!
